Produttori del Barbaresco

2012 Barbaresco

Piemonte Italy

In 1894, a cooperative (Cantine Sociale) was formed by gathering together nine Barbaresco vineyard owners to make wine in a local castle.  The Cantine Sociale was shut down in the 1930s because of fascist economic rules.  In 1958, the priest in the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way the small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together 19 small growers and formed the Produttori del Barbaresco.  The first three vintages were made in the church basement and later in the winery built across the square where the Produttori is presently located.  By Italian law, Barbaresco wines must be aged for at a minimum of two years (at least one year in oak) prior to release and aged for at least four years to be considered a riserva.  The wine must also have a minimum of 12.5% alcohol by volume, though most are closer to 13.5% ABV.

This silky and refined classic bright red Barbaresco exudes oak-inspired aromas and flavors of black cherries, pepper and spice with hints of forest fruit, bramble, tar, cedar and licorice with dry and firm tannins that fuel the wine's long finish, an exceptional wine when served with risottos, white meats, poultry, game, venison,  egg pastas and aged cheeses.  90 points Wine Spectator.  Anticipated maturity 2015-2024. 14% ABV HWG
