2011 Salice Salentino Riserva DOC

Puglia Italy

This wine made from the late-ripening Negroamaro varietal that the Cantele team deftly cultivates to ensure that the final product is balanced without overbearing alcohol levels, which is uncommon for wines produced in the super-hot Puglia region.  The grapes were harvested at the end of September; destemmed, crushed and macerated on the skins for about 10 days; then aged for 24 months, first in used barriques and then in stainless steel tanks.  The result is a stunning wine that exudes aromas of Bing cherries, wild herbs and brambles that are followed by flavors of such red fruits as cherries, rhubarb and cranberries with hints of smokiness. This medium-bodied wine has the acidity that gives it the brightness that goes well with grilled meats (sausages) and pasta dishes with pork or beef ragu as well as an antipasti board of salumi and hard cheeses.  13%ABV HWG
