Bodegas Volver

2012 Old-Vine Alicante Monastrell

Alicante Spain

Bodegas Volver, a joint venture between importer Jorge Ordonez and Rafael Canizares, produces wines from huge holdings of 252 acres in La Mancha, 457 acres in Alicante and 125 acres in Jumilla.  The 2012 Tarima Hill Alicante is made from old-vine Monastrell (Mourvedre) grapes grown at an elevation of 2,000-2,500 feet.  From vines planted between 1935 and 1970, the juice was aged 20 months in French oak, resulting in a wine, deep garnet in color with flashes of violet, that displays seductively-perfumed aromas of dark berry liqueur, dark red cherries, cassis and leather, followed by flavors of black berries, plums and licorice with hints of smoke, licorice and espresso.  Juicy acidity and well-integrated tannins give this wine an elegant but persistent finish.  92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wile Cellar; 91 points Wine Spectator.  Drink now through 2022.  15% ABV HWG
