Eric & Joel Durand

2012 Saint Joseph "Les Coteaux"

Northern Rhone Valley

The Durand brothers, Eric and Joel, took over the family estate in 1991 and are now regarded as among the most recognized producers in the Northern Rhone Valley.  Their vineyard is situated in the steep hillsides on terraces created by the Romans, so steep that harvesting grapes by hand is the only option open to winemakers.  The soil is composed of small gravel and decomposed schist over a bedrock of granite that provides excellent water drainage; however, for this reason, they have to rebuild the terraces every year to maintain the earth on the rocky soils.

This medium-bodied and dry Syrah delivers loads of spice box, ground pepper and such assorted black fruits as damson plum, cherry and black currant with hints of black pepper and blueberry that lead to fine tannins on the finish.  91-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate; 91 points Wine Spectator.  13% ABV PMY
