2013 Bernkasteler Lay Riesling KabinettMosel Germany
The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. Grown in the Mosel's steep, south-facing slopes create the perfect climate for Riesling, giving the vines ideal exposure to the sun. Generally cool conditions allow the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright acidity. Rocky outcroppings and stony soil reflect sunlight and hold in heat, creating very warm microclimates in the best sites that help to ensure excellent ripeness. Thin topsoil force the vines to dig deep for water and nutrients, producing vibrant wines that capture the strong minerality of the soil.
The site of Bernkasteler Lay (pronounced "lie" -- an old dialect word for "slate"), as the name implies, is composed primarily of blue slate with a slightly gentler slope than other Dr. Loosen estates, thereby producing richly textured, assertive wines. This Kabinett, the lightest and most delicate style of Riesling, displays both delicacy and strength in its aromatic intensity and concentrated texture with aromas and flavors of white pear, crisp citrus and a hint of honey on the finish. 7.5% ABV C&C
