Bodegas Avancia

2013 Cuvee de O Godello

Valdeorras Spain

The Godello (pronounced "go-DAY-oh"), grown principally in northern Spain (and a little in Portugal), makes some wonderfully aromatic, medium-bodied dry white wines that, when well made, can be truly revelatory, even developing well with a little bottle age.  Bodegas Avancia is located in the mountains of Galicia in northwest Spain.  Its winemaker, Nacho Alvarez, crafts this Cuvee de O using the most modern  winemaking technology that coaxes the greatest possible varietal expression from the wine.  The grapes were hand harvested into small baskets to prevent bruising, with 25% of the juice fermented in oak barrels and the balance in stainless steel, then aged sur lie for six months.  The result is a wine with lively, sharply-focuses citrus and orchard fruit aromas that are complemented by anise, succulent herbs and honeysuckle.  Flavors of Meyer lemon and pear abound along with dry minerality on the finish.  91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar.
